Clear answers to the questions you may have

About Lab-grown diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are still unfamiliar to many clients, and it is completely natural to have questions. At Eterling, we believe that understanding your diamond is part of the experience. A jewel should be chosen with clarity, trust, and intention, never with doubt.

Below, we answer the questions we are most often asked.

Is a lab-grown diamond really a diamond?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond in every scientific and gemological sense.

It is composed of pure carbon, with the same crystal structure and the same exceptional hardness as a mined diamond.

The only difference is its origin. Instead of forming deep underground over millions of years, a lab-grown diamond is created by recreating those natural conditions in a controlled environment. The crystal grows in a matter of weeks, but the result is the same stone. Durable, brilliant, and timeless.

Will it look or age differently from a mined diamond?

No. To the naked eye, there is absolutely no difference.

Lab-grown diamonds reflect light in the same way and display the same brilliance, sparkle, and fire as mined diamonds. Over time, they do not fade, lose colour, or become cloudy. They are just as suited to everyday wear, including engagement rings and symbolic pieces meant to last a lifetime.

Even trained gemologists require advanced, specialized equipment to distinguish a lab-grown diamond from a mined one.

Are lab-grown diamonds graded and certified?

Yes, and according to the same strict standards.

Lab-grown diamonds are graded using the universal 4Cs: carat, colour, clarity, and cut. Just like natural diamonds, they come in a wide range of qualities, meaning each stone is unique.

They are certified by independent gemological laboratories such as IGI, GIA or GCAL, which apply the same rigorous criteria used for mined diamonds.

Are lab-grown diamonds more accessible?

Yes, for a very simple reason.

Without the costs associated with mining, extraction, and large-scale infrastructure, lab-grown diamonds are more accessible. This allows clients to choose a larger stone, a higher clarity, or a finer cut, without compromising on quality or beauty.

It is not about choosing less. It is about choosing differently.

Why do some clients prefer lab-grown diamonds?

For many clients, the choice is about transparency and intention.

Traditional diamond mining involves heavy machinery, deep excavation, and long-lasting impact on landscapes and ecosystems. As diamond deposits become harder to access, extraction requires increasing amounts of energy and causes greater environmental disruption.

Lab-grown diamonds bypass this mining process entirely. While producing diamonds in a laboratory does require energy, this industry is evolving rapidly, with more producers turning toward renewable energy and more efficient production methods. Over time, their environmental footprint continues to decrease.

Which diamond is right for me?

There is no single right answer.

Some clients are drawn to the natural history and rarity of a mined diamond. Others prefer the modernity, transparency, and flexibility of a lab-grown stone. Both choices are meaningful, and both are valid.

At Eterling, our role is not to tell you what to choose, but to guide you so you can choose with confidence.

✨ Because the most beautiful diamond is the one that feels right for you, today and for years to come.
